An EV in the driveway. A ducted heat pump for year-round comfort. An induction hob in the new kitchen. Solar panels further down the track.
These upgrades can change how you use your home—and what you need from its electrical system.
Before choosing equipment, it pays to check the foundation behind it: your switchboard, wiring and incoming power supply.
At Plains Electrical Ltd, we help homeowners across Christchurch and Selwyn plan electrical upgrades around how they live today and what they want to add next.
Why check your switchboard before upgrading?
Your switchboard distributes power around your home and houses the devices that protect its circuits. An older board may have limited room for additional circuits or protection that needs updating.
Even a modern board deserves a closer look when you are adding substantial electrical loads. Available space is only part of the picture. The incoming supply, existing wiring and appliances that may run together also matter.
A larger switchboard does not automatically give your home more power. A proper assessment checks both the board and the electrical supply.
Buying an EV? Plan the charging installation first
A dedicated home EV charger makes charging part of your everyday routine. Choosing the right installation involves more than finding a convenient spot on the garage wall.
We can assess the cable route, available supply capacity, circuit protection and charger features that suit your home.
Depending on the charger and installation, smart charging can allow scheduled charging during cheaper electricity periods. Compatible load management can adjust charging to suit the power available while other appliances are operating.
Not every EV charger installation needs a full switchboard replacement. We will explain whether your existing setup is suitable, needs alterations or would benefit from an upgrade.
Installing ducted heating, an induction hob or a spa?
One new appliance may fit comfortably within your existing setup. Several upgrades planned together deserve a coordinated approach.
Think about a winter evening with heating running, dinner cooking, hot water reheating and an EV charging. The important question is how the home handles those demands together.
If you are planning ducted heating and cooling, a kitchen renovation, a spa pool or a garage upgrade, involve your electrician early. This gives you time to organise dedicated circuits, assess capacity and consider load management where appropriate.
Thinking about solar or battery storage later?
You do not need to install everything at once to make a useful plan.
If solar or battery storage is on your wish list, tell us before your switchboard upgrade or renovation. We can consider space, cable routes and electrical provisions in coordination with your future system installer.
Solar and battery systems have their own design requirements. Leaving spare room in a switchboard is helpful, but it does not make every future system ready to connect.
Planning ahead can reduce avoidable alterations when the next stage goes ahead.
What can a switchboard upgrade include?
The scope depends on your existing installation and planned work. It may include:
- A replacement enclosure with room for planned additional circuits.
- Updated circuit protection, including individual RCBOs where appropriate.
- Assessment of the main switch, earthing and existing connections.
- Clear circuit labelling.
- Surge protection where suitable.
- New circuits for EV charging, heating, cooking or outdoor equipment.
- Testing, certification and any required inspection.
An RCBO combines overload and short-circuit protection with residual-current protection in one device. Individual RCBOs can help keep a fault on one circuit from interrupting other circuits.
We explain what is needed for your home and what is an optional improvement, so you can make an informed decision.
Renovating? Use the opportunity to plan the whole job
A renovation is a useful time to discuss more than the immediate appliance connection.
While access is available, it may make sense to prepare wiring for a future EV charger, improve kitchen lighting, add outdoor power or provide a suitable supply to a garage or workshop.
The goal is a practical electrical plan that supports your renovation and makes later additions easier.
